However, it does prove that homeopathy does work in mice with anxiety. That remedy has been used for over 200 years for anxiety. Why let biases against a type of medicine discredit a scientific study? Animal studies prove there is no placebo affect with this remedy.

Mice? Seriously? I've had doubts about homeopathy as humans are very likely to feel the placebo effect, but is there such a thing in tests on mice? Although, tests on mice really doesn't predict human behaviour that precisely, either.

This study is, for me, another beautiful reminder of a common theme that is seen throughout many, if not all, aspects of medicine.

While at first blush this idea that we docs don't really know what we're doing or why our therapies are helping may appear somewhat unsettling, I actually find the prevalence of the so-called "placebo effect" to be quite liberating.

After all, it implies that the ultimate power to heal ourselves lies within each of us - something that I have been increasingly convinced of throughout my time in practice, and which I wholeheartedly utilize with my patients.

Most patients do possess this capacity for self-healing within themselves, and simply need the proper healing trigger from a well-chosen external source of information.

While I clearly believe that the homeopathic remedy is one of the best such triggers - a surgical intervention (or mock surgical intervention, as the case may be - can be just as healing: that is, provided it's used with the right group of patients.

For every patient who has had a wonderful response to a surgical procedure such as vertebroplasty, it seems as if are as many who have some sort of chronic complication ...

... mind you, this ratio is undoubtedly inflated in my mind, due to the fact that the patients who have the wonderfully-healing surgical responses likely never see the need to visit an alternative medical practitioner like myself!

My point is that, IMHO, all forms of medicine have at least some potential for healing inherent within them.

The only question which remains is WHICH medicine will be most healing for THIS GIVEN patient.

This is the place where individualization must occur, and where (IMHO) we, as doctors, must set aside our alleged "expertise" and realize that no cookbook protocol will likely be able to match the healing strength of a truly well-matched individualized prescription.

However, much like we see in homeopathy, even a peripherally well-matched prescription will be able to do some good for the patient.

So why is it that these patients appear to be mostly well-matched, even though no procedure was followed to select only those patients who may benefit from sham vertebroplasty?

Unless … one was … unbeknownst to doctors and patients alike … a little something called selection bias.

The subjects who were involved in the study, after all, were those who were willing to undergo this invasive (cement?!) vertebral injection, despite the fact that they were informed beforehand it would just as likely be a placebo as the real thing!

This may suggest that they were patients who on some level found the idea of this invasive treatment to be somewhat appealing.

It seems that, IMHO, these study subjects instinctively selected for themselves the treatment that, of all their alternatives, was the most well-matched to them!

As I said, all in all, quite a beautiful study indeed :)
Oh, boy. Here we go. I'm a nurse, and the vast majority of fears about any vaccines are unfounded. The risks, as far as I see from research, do NOT outweigh the benefits it this case either. One person comments that gardisil did not prevent her cancer - but patients are told upfront that it only prevents some sources of cervical cancer, so she can't complain when she ends up in the minority. That doesn't mean it doesn't help other people!
